THEATRE CENTRE'S MEMBER APPLICATIONS

ADVICE FOR THOSE APPLYING

The Theatre Centre was established in 1971 and is an organization that promotes cooperation between professional theatre companies and promotes their interests. The Theatre Centre furthers the working conditions of its member companies both nationally and locally. The Theatre Centre’s members are small- and medium-sized professional theatres whose work is based on both the dynamics of the group as well as its individual artists. The member companies all share the mutual goal of independently practicing the art of professional theatre, performance, dance and/or drama.

The term professional here means that the member companies are committed to long-term artistic work that requires full-time commitment and is based on adequate artistic experience and education, notwithstanding the juridical and economic conditions in which the company practices its artistic work.

APPENDICES REQUIRED FOR THE THEATRE CENTRE’S MEMBER APPLICATIONS

1. A free-form application introducing the core purpose and ideology of the applying company.

2. A few words about what the applicant seeks via the Theatre Centre’s membership and how the company in question wants to act via the Centre. As the role of the Theatre Centre has changed quite a lot during recent decades, we also ask the applicant to tell whether the Centre’s present line of action is familiar to the applicant.

3. The annual report of the applying company, a description of what they are doing during the present year as well as a presentation of the company’s artists. We would also like to see the company’s plan of action.

4. The company’s profit-and-loss statement from the past year and a presentation of the company’s financial structure. We also want a description of how the applying company hopes their financial structure will develop in the coming years.

5. Information on whether the applying company has the possibility to take part in the work of the Theatre Centre’s board. (This is not a prerequisite for applying for membership.)

When handling the applications (from theatres and companies), the Theatre Centre’s Board considers among other things the following: how professional the applicant’s work is and for how long it has operated; what is the economic structure of the applicant and whether the company receives regular subsidies; the applicant’s artistic level and artistic proof; in addition to this, regional aspects are also considered. The applicant has to be independently administrated and not be part of some other organization or owned by another organization or public corporation. The applicant’s work must not seek to profit-making or be in any major way focused around economic interests. The applicant’s artistic work must be sufficiently continuous and long-term.
